Poughkeepsie Colossus

The first train crossed the bridge on December 28,1888.
I crossed the bridge in 1965 on a BSA motorcycle.
A member of our family had ridden one of those newfangled “safety bicycles”
over the bridge way back when the safety bicycle was a new contraption.
I grew up hearing the story from my Dad - usually when he took me down to the Poughkeepsie Station to watch the 20th Century Limited round the banked curve south of the station and roar by.
I can still see in my mind the lighted logo on the rear of the observation car as it speed to Albany.
It didn’t even slow down for Poughkeepsie.
During this trip to the bridge I imagined it as a huge thing that has beena part of the landscape so long people don’t even notice it anymore.
So, I attempted to express this feeling in my photographs .... the impact of the bridge towering over parts of town. There’s plenty to read if you Google the Poughkeepsie Train Bridge. I sure do hope they get that walkway across the Hudson built before I get to old to ride.
